In 1608 Captain John Smith Chesapeake Bay study. Charles I granted the Royal Charter of Maryland Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore, in 1632, and the English settlers, many of whom were Catholic, landed on St. Clement (now Blakiston) Island in 1634. Religious freedom, granted all Christians tolerance issued in Maryland assembly in 1649 had ended in revolt Puritan, 1654-1658.

The Bay produces more fish and shellfish, oysters, crabs, clams, fin fish, any similar body of water. Important agricultural products are greenhouse and nursery products, poultry, dairy, eggs and soy. Stone, coal, sand, gravel, cement and clay are the major minerals.

Manufacturing includes foods, chemicals, computer and electronic products, transportation equipment and primary metals. Baltimore, home of the Johns Hopkins University and Hospital, ranks as the second port of the country in foreign tonnage. The capital, Annapolis is the site of the US Naval Academy.
