Arrival: What to Expect?

Land on the island for the first time is an exciting time, and often met with some concern. There are some things you can do to make your way to Guam and to minimize stress for you and your family.

Bring a pen.

There will be a form or two to complete when you are on the last part of your flight for a trip to Guam. While Guam is a U.S. territory, the island maintains its own customs (which means they control what comes to the island is like returning to the U.S. from a foreign country). Guam is the largest island and the southernmost of the Mariana Archipelago. The island is divided into a coral limestone plateau and the north of the southern chain of volcanic hills. Today, Guam is an unincorporated, organized territory of the United States. The people of Guam have been U.S. citizens since 1950. They were represented in Congress by a delegate since 1973 without voting rights, but they can not participate in presidential elections. The executive branch includes an elected governor who serves a four-year period. The legislature is a unicameral legislative body composed of 21 members, whose members are elected every two years.

Guam had probably studied the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan (sailing, Spain) in 1521. The island was officially declared to Spain in 1565, and his people were forced to submit, and conversion to Roman Catholicism in the early months of 1668. After the Spanish-American War in 1898, Spain ceded Guam to the United States. From 1899-1949, the U.S. Navy in Guam, except during the Japanese occupation of 1941-1944. Guam liberated by U.S. forces in the summer of 1944. Guam's economy is based on tourism and military spending in the United States (U.S. Navy and Air Force to set occupies a third of Guam in March).
